The Great Fall Furnace Dilemma: Is It Time to Replace That Old Furnace?

In our recent blog posts, we’ve written about how important regular maintenance is for your home heating system. You want this task taken care of long before the first cold day arrives! In this post, we’re going to look at a bigger winter preparation step: replacing the entire furnace. If you have an old gas furnace, we recommend that you consider having it replaced with a new one during the fall.

What would you call an “old” furnace?

Since the majority of gas furnaces (the most common furnace type system found in homes) last between 15 to 20 years with proper care, we’d call any furnace over 20 “old.” A furnace can still continue to function if it’s been around for two decades, but it’s at a higher risk of the following:

  • Breaking down suddenly (not fun during a winter night!)
  • Needing repairs for smaller malfunctions
  • Wasting energy
  • Developing safety hazards

But if your furnace hasn’t reached its 20th anniversary, you may still want to replace it. Check your recent heating bills to see if they’ve been climbing, and make sure that you haven’t been paying more than $500 a year in repairs to keep the furnace running. Even if everything seems fine, consider that a new, high-efficiency furnace can start saving you money immediately and perform better than your current furnace ever did.
