If your electrical system is out of date, you may not have GFCI or AFCI outlets installed in your home. You should, though, as these are not only required by codes in certain areas of the home, but they serve to keep you and your property safe from issues cause by electrical faults.

They actually protect against two very different dangers, as you'll learn below. If you need any GFCI or AFCI outlet services in Chicago, IL, we're the electricians to call. We will make sure that your outlets are installed in the right areas of your home, and that everything is up to code. Contact Brilliant Home Services with any questions that you may have.

What’s the Difference Between GFCI and AFCI Outlets?

A GFCI outlet is a ground fault circuit interrupter. A ground fault occurs when electricity takes an improper path to ground itself. The danger of this is that the path may be directly through a human body. GFCI outlets measures voltage from the hot side of the outlet against that of the neutral side. If there is a discrepancy in these levels, the GFCI outlet will trip, and will have to be reset before it will put out more electricity. An AFCI outlet operates in a similar manner, but instead protects against arc faults. These may occur as a result of loose connections or damaged wiring, and are a serious fire hazard. GFCI outlets are required in areas where water is a concern, such as outdoors and in bathrooms, while AFCI outlets are now required in most living areas.
