How Whole–House Humidifiers Work
The standard portable humidifier simply sprays out mist into a room, but a whole–house humidifier is integrated into the HVAC system to work in conjunction with the heater and the air conditioner. The standard humidifier is connected to the fresh water plumbing and brings water in through pipes to a large pad. The water soaks the pad, and as dry air passes through a chamber above it, water evaporates from the pad into the air. The remaining water is drained out. A device called a humidistat placed inside the house is used to control the amount of moisture in the air, and can be made into part of the standard thermostat controls.
The Advantages of a Humidifier
Humidifiers can help homes around the year, but particularly during the winter, when a large amount of the moisture in the air freezes into ice. Standard atmospheric combustion furnaces can also contribute to drier air inside a home. Here’s how a humidifier helps you out by creating a better humidity balance:
- Comfort: It’s hard to stay warm during cold weather when the air is so dry that heat easily escapes from your body. A humidifier provides a heat seal of moisture around you, making comfort easier to achieve.
- Energy savings: With people in your home feeling on average 8–10° warmer thanks to balanced humidity, you won’t need to spend as much money operating the heating system throughout the day and night.
- Health improvements: More humid air means fewer sore throats, and less dry and itchy skin. Best of all, it slows down the spread of illness from person to person.
